Last Fair Maiden
Saving asia's Irrawaddy dolphins
text Lee Jin Pyn

I was late. Extremely late. So late that if there were a Guinness Book of Records for late submissions, I would probably qualify. So late that I was not even sure I was still the writer for the article.

But I could not submit this story before getting any decent pictures. It was the chance for the public to get acquainted with the Irrawaddy dolphins of Southeast Asia. A chance the dolphins seemed intent on evading.

Infamously shy and not known to be acrobatic, the Irrawaddy dolphin, or Orcaella brevirostris, is not as visible as its famous flamboyant bottlenose cousin. It rarely breaches, hardly flicks its tail above water, and when it surfaces to breathe its head remains underwater. And it certainly never rides the bows of any ships, performing acrobatic feats to the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of the customers.
