A filmmaking expedition to australia's far north puts rare and vanishing wildlife in the public eye
text Paul Walden
photos Justin Gilligan

The fight to save the environment is far from lost. But in spite of all efforts, we may well be some of the last people to ever see many of Earth's most fascinating creatures alive. In the words of cameraman Pawel Achtel, "Encountering rare wildlife often feels like a farewell."

All that will be left for our children are the recordings of what we have experienced, which made an expedition to document one of the world's few remaining bastions of true wilderness - Australia’s legendary Raine Island and Great Detached Reefs - all the more special. Not just to tell my children that I have seen rare boobies, turtles, and sharks, but that we could shine some light on this tiny, isolated corner of the planet.

Beyond the Barrier
It is early December when marine biologist and photographer Justin Gilligan and I meet up with Pawel Achtel in the tourist Mecca of tropical Cairns. Pawel has chartered the motor vessel MV Kalinda out of Townsville for a filmmaking trip to Australia’s Far North. Raine Island and the Great Detached Reefs are in a very remote location. In fact, the area is still largely uncharted.
