My first encounter with photography was some 30 years ago. I was flipping through a collection of wildlife photography in the library and was deeply mesmerised by the images. That got me hooked into photography, and I’ve never looked back since. My very first camera was a Pentax Spotmatic, which I bought after much scrimping and saving. However, looking at the slides I shot with my very own hands, the satisfaction I got from them made that year of frugality absolutely worth it.
Three decades have passed and I have said my good-byes to Fujichrome Velvia and moved on to digital. The Canon 1Ds Mark II has been able to provide me with the same clarity and detail that I used to get from Velvia, with the added convenience of being able to process my own images at home on my workstation. My philosophy has always been to portray wildlife in their natural habitat in the best possible way. They say eyes are mirrors to the soul, so I have always tried to shoot an animal or insect in a way that mimics real-life eye contact. It seems as if the creature was really looking at you, and makes the picture come alive.
