Chiang Mai Travel Photography Getaway

HIGHLIGHTS

Beyond Chiang Mai’s renowned charm lies a culture steeped in tradition and diverse communities defined by their seclusion in the mountains.

Join us as we explore the nuances of Thai culture found within and beyond Chiang Mai’s temples, captivating festivals, and lush terrain. In addition to enjoying these classic charms, we will take you behind the scenes for a sharp insight into the lives of local ethnic minorities, Thai boxers, and regal elephants.

Felix Hug (Travel Photographer of the Year Runner-Up and ASIAN Geographic Grand Prize Winner) has teamed up with ASIAN Geographic and photographer James Robert Fuller (a long-time Chiang Mai resident) to give you the chance to capture the many faces of Chiang Mai through your lens.

THE SETUP - CHIANG MAI

The Setup – Chiang Mai
Our exclusive getaway and workshop base will be at the Mae Ping Home Stay on the grounds of a private Thai villa outside of town.
Each evening we will return from our excursions to relax in the luxury rooms next to a tranquil swimming pool under the stars, while sharing our knowledge and adventures of the day and helping you enhance your images.

We will have our own cars and drivers, independent of other local tour schedules, and specifically suited to bring us to the most interesting places at the right time for stunning images.
James’ local knowledge and Felix’s photography expertise combine seamlessly to give you a unique Chiang Mai travel and photography experience.

CHIANG MAI SCHEDULE
5

November, Wed (Day 1)
Singapore – Chiang Mai
Participants arrive and check in. Once guests are settled in, a delicious local lunch is served at the home stay. After a short introduction, James will give us the first view of the city he knows so well. Not only a gifted photographer, James also has experience training and competing in Muay Thai, Thai boxing. We will go behind the scenes at a training camp in Chiang Mai, offering plenty of opportunities to capture the spirit of this unique sport.
After dinner, there will be a photography talk with Felix Hug as he shares a collection of his images and expert advice as a professional destination photographer.

November, Thurs (Day 2)
Chiang Mai Elephant Camp - Tribe & Cultural Villages

In the early morning hours we will drive out of town to visit one of the smaller and more picturesque elephant camps (Chiang Dao). The elephants have played a large role in local trade and history, though modern conditions have taken a large toll on this impressive species. We will get a firsthand view of the care and training of the elephants as the trainers – mahouts – demonstrate some of their unusual skills.
After our visit to the camp, we will explore local villages, including an ethnic hill tribe community.
Back at the home stay we will enjoy dinner, get some personal time, and have the chance to get some personalised tips from Felix – or just relax under the stars.

7 November, Fri (Day 3)
Chiang Mai Temples - Free and easy in Chiang Mai town
The Lanna culture, a distinctive tradition of Northern Thailand, has strongly influenced the daily life, religion and architecture of the region over the past millennium. We will watch the morning procession of the monks as they collect alms, visiting the temple on Doi Suthep mountain as well as some of the other splendid temples (Wat Umong, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Chiang Man) in Chiang Mai.
In the evening, James will present a slideshow and discuss his life as a working photographer based in Chiang Mai. James will offer tips and tricks for improving technique as we enjoy the evening at our peaceful home stay.

8 November, Sat (Day 4)
Chiang Mai Yi Peng Festival
Today we take some time to explore the city on our own, visiting the market and learning about local food. We meet in the afternoon and prepare our gear to visit the amazing Yi Peng festival, where the air is filled with lanterns and the river with boats of banana leaf. The festival is one of the year’s highlights, and Felix and James will give you the ultimate vantage points to help you to take poignant images of the festival.

9 November, Sun (Day 4)
Chiang Mai - Singapore
In the morning, we will have the option of driving out to the umbrella and handicraft workshops, or staying at the home stay to work on images and get some final tips on post-production.
The best images will be selected to feature in the afternoon slideshow – the concluding point of our voyage. After the slideshow, we will drive to the airport and board our flight back to Singapore.
