Himalayas Expedition 2008
In conjunction with Atrium Eco Travel, Asian Geographic is organising an expedition to one of the most remote and mythical regions of India - Ladakh. Bounded by two of the world's mightiest mountain ranges, the great Himalayas and the Karakoram, Ladakh sits high in a Himalayan valley between the Ladakh and Zaskar ranges.
In this trip, participants will get to traverse through bizarre and surrealistic landscapes and travel at altitudes of more than 5,000 metres; visit regions that until recently were cut off to tourists, and immerse in the rich culture and history of ancient Buddhist monasteries that contain some of Asia's greatest wonders of gold and tapestry work.
Interested parties, please visit http://www.asiangeo.com/events_himalayas2008.html to download the application form and fax/mail it in by 30 May 2008. Slots are limited and are on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Indonesia Floods Kills 11, Displaces Thousands
Torrential rains in Indonesia's Java and Nusa Tenggara Timur islands have triggered floods and landslides, killing 11 people and displacing thousands over the last two weeks in February. Some cities in Central Java have been inundated by filthy water up to two- metres high, causing more than 3,500 people to be displaced. Indonesia's leading environment group, Walhi, says ecological destruction caused by deforestation, land conversion and chaotic planning is responsible for the disasters. www.planetark.com |

Forty-five Tonnes of Dead Fish Wash Up on Taiwan's Beaches
About 45 tonnes of wild and farmed fish washed up on the tourism-dependent Penghu Island archipelago in the Taiwan Strait on the week of 14 February following a cold snap. Temperatures had dipped below nine degrees Celsius for three days in early February, resulting in the worst mass killing off Penghu in 30 years. Local media said that 10 times that amount of dead fish was still in the water, and that government agencies have allocated T$1.06 million (US$34,500) for daily beach cleanups.

Advance Farm Subsidies Given After Snow Damage
China has made early payment of 63.3 billion yuan (US$9 billion) in farm subsidies on 20 February to encourage spring planting, after devastating snowstorms in central and southern provinces widely damaged crops. The worst winter weather in half a century has affected most of central and southern China, killing more than 10 people and damaging crops on at least 11.8 million hectares of farmland, contributing further to an 11-year high inflation of 7.1 percent in January. However, the damage could be offset by increased yields due to increased water supply from the snow as predicted by the agricultural ministry.

One Life Experience
Recently, extended its support for the One Life Experience exhibition, which attracted more than 8,000 Singaporeans during its two-month-long run (1 December 2007 ñ 3 February 2008) in Singapore. Participants got to hear about the real-life stories of people living with HIV/AIDS and took the time to walk in their shoes. As a result, many have pledged to support them in their fight against the virus and the stigma it carries.
While the exhibition has ended, World Vision hopes that Asia will continue in the fight against AIDS, and the fight against hate. |
