As ASIAN Geographic’s annual Images of Asia (IOA) 2020 Photo/Videography Competition looms closer, submissions to our IOA Monthly competition – the precursor to our annual event – are pouring in. We have received stunning photos across the categories, and are now featuring our monthly winners in an exclusive interview!
Below is our interview with one of this month’s spotlight, Geza J. Holzinger, the IOA Monthly July 2020 winner in the Black & White category, selected from the June 2020 entries.
AG: What is the story of your beginning and journey to creating great images?
Geza: I have always loved creative work, and I currently work as a freelance web designer. As a photographer, I specialise in documenting the daily lives of disappearing and endangered cultures, current social and political conflicts, humanitarian crises and environmental destructions and their social consequences. I began my photography career in 1993 to complement magazine articles. I have written several articles on natural science and several pragmatic reports for international magazines and newspapers since then. In 2012, I created the Disappearing Cultures Project. The goal of this project is to bring about awareness by collecting stories and images of the disappearing cultural heritages before their way of life is lost forever.

AG: How would you define your style and concepts you enjoy exploring?
Geza: My photography style is embedded in genres of documentary and photojournalism. My images are focused on the observation of nature, people and emotions. I have always been interested in natural sciences, and find conservation photography and visual anthropology vital.
AG: What is great photography to you, and are there any photographers you would like to work with?
Geza: My favourite photographers are GMB Akash, Muhammed Muheisen, and Charlie Hamilton James. I would like to work with Jimmy Nelson on a conservation project in the near future.
AG: What is your preferred imaging gear to work with and why?
Geza: My favorite camera is the Nikon D810 with either the Nikon, Sigma Art or Irix lenses. This camera provides high image quality and works excellently in tropical climates. Additionally, I use the Cokin square filter system and Manfrotto stativ.
AG: What is the next Asian destination you’d like to explore and why?
Geza: The next destination will be Myanmar. There are plenty to discover there, especially in the field of cultural anthropology and natural wonders.
AG: Can you share more about your current and upcoming projects?
Geza: Currently, I am working on some articles that are partly for Hungarian magazines. My long-term goal is to continue to document the endangered cultures – when we can finally travel again!
